BACKGROUND
The Scale of Food Loss & Waste in Indonesia
Indonesia is among the countries with the highest levels of food waste in Southeast Asia. According to the Food Waste Index Report 2024 published by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Indonesia generates approximately 14.73 million tons of food waste annually.
In addition, data from the National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN) indicates that out of 38.6 million tons of total national waste generated in 2024, food waste represents one of the largest contributors. This high volume reflects the significant amount of edible food being discarded, along with its far-reaching impacts on the environment, food security, and economic losses.
