BACKGROUND
The Volume/Accumulation of Food Loss and Waste in Indonesia
Food Loss & Waste in Indonesia reached 23 to 48 million tons per year between 2000 and 2019, equal to 115 to 184 kilograms per capita annually. This amount represents the loss of 29 to 47 percent of the energy needed to feed the population. Food Loss & Waste also generated approximately 1,702.9 megatons of CO₂e emissions and caused economic losses estimated at Rp 213 to 551 trillion each year.

In February 2020, Surplus Indonesia (PT Ekonomi Sirkular Nusantara) established the Surplus Community to advance the Zero Food Waste movement. It began as an initiative to educate the public about environmental issues, especially food waste, and to provide a platform that helps people adopt more sustainable daily habits.
The initiative is now formally part of the Surplus Food Rescue Foundation, which was established on 21 May 2021. The Foundation focuses on education, empowerment, social and humanitarian work, and environmental advocacy, with the aim of building a society that is more aware of food waste and committed to sustainability.
